A dirty filter is a fairly common problem in cars, and not only in diesel engines but also in newer petrol engines with catalytic converters or GPF filters. Driving in urban conditions can cause the filter to clog after only a few thousand kilometres.
Removing filters is a practice that constitutes an offence, leading to the loss of the vehicle’s type approval and a failed technical inspection. Failure to comply with the exhaust emissions standard can result in heavy financial penalties, which in some countries amount to around 1000 euros.
Many workshops do not offer filter regeneration services and instead suggest that customers buy a new filter or a replacement part of dubious quality that often does not meet the manufacturer’s specifications. Buying a new original DPF filter costs, depending on the car model, between 940 and 2350 euros. For second-hand vehicles, this expense is several times higher. Used filters are available at a price of around 350 euros, but buying them carries the risk of acquiring a mechanically damaged or defective part.
What to do?
The solution comes in the form of a hydrodynamic regeneration method that restores the filter to its manufacturing specifications. For private vehicles, this service represents an investment of between 95 and 140 euros, depending on the degree of contamination. For heavy vehicles, the cost considerably exceeds 235 euros. The additional costs of removal, installation and service calibration must be taken into account: the total cost ranges between 235 and 350 euros for private vehicles.
The pressure to protect the environment, strict exhaust emissions standards and the heavy penalties for removing the DPF filter mean that professional regeneration services are increasingly in demand.
